Animal Welfare Officer Skill Set
What is the course about?
You will gain an understanding of the regulatory and technical issues associated with animal welfare and be well versed in the need to apply correct animal welfare practices across the worksite. This skill set is for the Animal Welfare Officer is a company employee who manages the company's animal welfare team and therefore is able to:
- understand and articulate the regulatory and technical issues associated with animal welfare
- represent the company regarding the approach taken to address animal welfare issues
- influence company policies, procedures, training regimes, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Quality Assurance (QA) documentation as they relate to procedures impacting on animal welfare
- review, as part of their duties, the results of the routine monitoring of procedures impacting on animal welfare
- review the results of internal and external audits to assess the performance of the company in relation to animal welfare
- oversee the implementation of corrective actions and preventative measures
- monitor the effectiveness of corrective actions and preventative measures
- implement animal welfare assessment criteria and perform an abattoir animal welfare assessment
- recognise operative training needs and implement training for animal handlers.
What do I do if I need to cancel my booking?
Please contact AUS-MEAT immediately to avoid any cancellation fees. Full payment is required no later than 5 days prior to the commencement of training. A 50% cancellation fee will apply on cancellations received less than 10 working days prior to commencement of training.
NO refunds are given for cancellations received less than 5 working days prior to the commencement of training. Any transfers between courses will incur a $100 fee on each instance.

- Workbooks and assessments
- Morning tea and lunch
- Issue of certificate
Who should attend?
- Any person who might be involved with the monitoring of the industry animal welfare standards at a meat processing facility (internal auditing)
- Any person Handling stock on a daily basis, stock yard, race men and knocking box workers.
English is not my first language! Will I have problems?
All AUS-MEAT training courses are presented in English. A sound understanding of the English language is required. All workbooks and assessments are conducted in English. If required, the use of dictionaries or tablets are acceptable.

How will you be assessed?
A minimum of three different forms of assessment is required to demonstrate competency. As a minimum, these must include:
- quiz of underpinning knowledge
- workplace demonstration
- workplace referee or third-party report of performance over time.
This will be completed as both self-paced learning and then practical on the job training with one of our qualified trainers.
Issue of Certificates
At the successful completion of this course, you will be issued with a Statement of Attainment.
Units of Competency issued:
- AMPLSK401 (AMPA416) - Oversee humane handling of animals.
- AMPLSK201 (AMPA2006) – Apply animal welfare and handling requirements.

Do I need to bring anything?
You will need to bring the following to the course:
- Closed in shoe/boots - you'll be required to move through the livestock lairage facilities
- All protective clothing for entering production areas will be supplied by the hosting processor
